Sprint just put a microwave setup on the top of the Sears Tower.
If the roof of your house/apartment can see the Sears Tower,
I think you can get a $45/month setup. Right now, you can
expect many megabits/second (more than you can get from DSL)
-- but then again, they just rolled it out and it's not fully subscribed.

Here is an excerpt from http://www.sprintbroadband.com/prsite/backgrounders/corporateProfile.html
"Sprint BWG has 200 megahertz of exclusively licensed radio wave
spectrum at the 2.1 and 2.5-2.7 Gigahertz (GHz) frequency, also
known as Multi-channel Multi-point Distribution Service (MMDS).
The Company uses this frequency to beam high-bandwidth data,
Internet, audio and video transmissions to residential homes,
businesses and other Internet Service Providers. Using a single
transmitter, Sprint BWG can serve a 35-mile radius coverage area
that reaches hundreds of thousands of potential residential
     and business customers."
