When I first installed debian and tried recompiling the kernel, I
couldn't run make menuconfig because I didn't have libncurses
    (libncurses wasn't there after I did apt-get install kernel-source).

Looking at the debian package listing web page, I see that it is a
recommended package for kernel-source, but not required. Is there
any way to apt-get recommended packages when downloading a package
    you want?

btw, I've found debian unstable to be really quite stable and high
    quality, so far
