Do a man apt-get and a man dpkg and search for build (/build) -- you'll
find that apt-get build-dep [package] -- this is a new feature in the
"unstable" version of apt and is therefore not guaranteed to work all
the time. Also new in apt is the ability to source several package trees
and install different versions (a la apt-get install stable/apache). I
would be careful with this feature, however.

Also, dpkg is the real brains being the apt interface -- if you do a
man dpkg and search for build, you'll find -b is your friend -- dpkg -b
directory filename. I haven't used this one much.

Seriously though, everyone who uses Debian should read through the
apt-get and dpkg manpages if you haven't already.

Let the record show that I did not recommend that you upgrade to sid. :)
