I have this odd little problem with my laptop and sound. The short of the
story, is that my computer locks up at some random interval while playing
    sounds.

The laptop has a ess1688 sound chip in it, and uses the soudblaster sound
driver. The difficulty I'm having is, that while I have it working,
sorta... I dont' have all the irq's and dma's right. So, we're talking
full system lockup when something does collide with another system
    component.

The Short question is: What are the proper (it is pnp, so possiable is
another option there) settings for the sound card.

The Specs on the laptop are:
    P120
    40 meg ram
    4gig hd
pcmcia ethernet card (a joy in and of itself.. story on that later)
    ess1688 sound card
Chips and Technologies something or other 1 meg video set. It seems to
    have detected properly.

The settings I was able to pull from win95 were
            i/o 0220-022f
            i/o 0388-038f
            irq 05
            dma 00

    The long story:
I had the urge to install linux on my laptop. So I downloaded mandrake 7.2
and installed it. I was hoping to have the same luck I had with my desktop
and have it detect all my hardware perfectly. I was surprised when I
didn't get sound. So I went off to figure out how to get sound running.

First I went and found out the sound driver I needed. That turned out to
be the standard SB16 driver. Then came how to install it.... Well.. more
like how in the blazes to recompile the kernel. Well In the process I
figured out one of the more basic of linux sysadmin tools, and got the
right kernel compiled and installed for sound to work. Sorta.

Sound would play, but then at random intervals the comptuer would lock up.
Entirely. All services would die and it would stop responding to all
commands except the power off button. So i went off and changed the 16 bit
irq on the sound card. That seemed to fix the problem. Evidently it
didn't. Right now I'm kinda grasping in the dark for the right settings to
    prevent these hardware problems.

    Any help would be apreaciated.

    Greg.
