    Well as I don't run Mandrake, I couldn't tell you whether it's enabled or not by default. If you
    used one of their dodgy high security settings, it could very well not be running.

    Check /etc/inetd.conf and make sure telnetd does not have a # at the beginning of the line, if it
    does take it out and restart inetd.

    Can you telnet into the box from the box? Try telnetting localhost does that work.

    And the one that gets a lot of us, you do know you can't login as root on a telnet session right?

    If you have telnet running and can login locally, I see know reason bar fnny firewalling that you
    can't login remotely.
