    Maybe you just covered this,

    But I had much better luck compiling SVGA Console options into the
    kernel and changing the video resolution at the LILO prompt (it will
    also scan for resolutions for you).

    PS: Some video cards, like the voodoo3, do not like running the X-server
    in the background (if for example, you were ctrl-alt-f2ing to get a
    console.
