I have noticed that I seem to have more intermittent outages from the ftp:
sites. One big factor is that ftp.eecs.umich.edu was down or unreachable
for a while (I finally stopped trying), but even aside from that I seem to
get more consistent results both at home and from the lab, with the http:
flavors. Purely anecdotal data, that, as is the observation that I have
used ftp: sites with excellent results for a long time, too.
