Sounds like a kernel that's looking for a second CPU and not finding it.
Does it struggle on after reporting the apparent demise of that hypothetical
second CPU? I'm thinking that this my be only what is to be expected when
SMP code that has found the APIC (and maybe other) trappings of an SMP board
fails to find the other CPU.
