Well, I've been using BeOS for a few months now and I'm typing this
from a BeOS desktop. BeOS is pretty neat- unlike other responders I like
the GUI's look and operation. It's got some nice features- it actually
does the Right Thing with file formats, it's lightning-quick and it's
got a decent developer community going for it.
There are a couple downsides, though- hardware support is light, it's
occasionally got bugs (less than windows, thankfully) and (pet peeve
warning) the networking code is bad.
I'd really like to see BeOS succeed- as a desktop OS it's got it all
over Windows and Linux[1]. Its posix underlayings would help ease
support woes... Be, Inc. decided a few months ago, however, that they'd
focus on BeIA, their OS for embedded applications. I think this was a
bad move and at the time it scared the BeOS community- it was worded so
that people took it as them dropping BeOS. They've clarified that
they'll still be working on BeOS but directing most of their effort
towards BeIA. While nice-sounding, I can't say I've seen any BeOS
developments out of them since the announcements. Only a few new pieces
of hardware are supported and the long-awaited update to the networking
code is still long-awaited. My hopes are not great for this platform,
and I'll probably be switching to Linux as my desktop in two or three
months unless something radical occurs.
[1] - Take this with a grain of salt, my experience with Linux as a
desktop was short and involved RedHat 5.2 with twm and fvwm. I've heard
a lot of nice things since then.
