Here's the deal: OfficeMax has all their monitors on clearance because
they will no longer be selling monitors and computers. (Gateway has
moved into a corner of their stores) Some monitors can be had for
crackhead prices...even though the employees don't know it and the tags
are usually much higher. Here is a list of prices that will appear when
they punch it up in their computer:

The Compaq MV520 15" is $75 and Compaq MV720 17" is $100. Don't forget
to get the Compaq $100 rebate from

The Terms and Conditions state "one rebate per qualifying purchase". A
phone call to Compaq verified that this means one rebate per each
monitor purchased...and you can buy several and get a rebate on each.
You just need to submit one request per envelope, and make photocopies
of receipts if you have more that one on the same receipt. I got a
couple MV520's, being unable to find any MV720's.
****** I left a MV520, in a never opened box, at the Lombard store at
closing time Saturday. Hey, only so many boxed monitors will fit in a
Trans Am! So if you can get to Lombard early Sunday, you should have a
good chance of getting paid $25 to pick up a monitor! ******
There are two different 19" EMC Mirage monitors that OM might have. The
986 is common in most stores for $299...not much discount. The 982 on
the other hand is only $130. The difference is .25 vs .27 dot pitch. I
really, really want one of these 19" 982's but couldn't find one. I
have an older 19" monitor (968?) that looks identical and would love
dual head. If anyone finds one and picks one up for me I'll be forever
grateful!
I've seen a few HP M50 15" for $100, not a real bargain IMHO.
It's the oddball ones that you can get a real deal on. I scored a IBM
Aptiva C50 2235-00N 15" monitor I saw sitting way up in a rack. A
glance at my pricelist told me they'd be selling it for $12. I always
ask an employee for a price-check too anyway, and its fun seeing their
face when they see the price. I think the manager was a little pissed I
was buying this like-new display model for $12.
I have pillaged and raped many stores in the far NorthWest and West
suburbs. Naperville has a Packard Hell PB1511/2020 that's $35 ($99 on
tag) but the box is beat to hell and the monitor is badly faded yellow.
They also have a CTX 15" that looks a little old too, and they wanted
$45-$50. I passed these up. Most OM display models are great
condition, I don't know what happened to these.
It's slim pickin but you could find some deals in your local stores.
Keep your eye out for stray monitors hidden away or up in the racks, and
grill employees to see if they have anything stashed in the back. And
don't forget to grab me a Mirage 982 19" monitor for $130 if you come
across one. Seriously...I'll pay you back!
Happy hunting!
