I'm no X programmer, but I know that it is, because the Loki games do
it. The depth settings have to be defined in your config ahead of time,
though, no dynamic probing of what the card is capable of.

I assume you could look for the X process to find the memory usage. And
finding the driver under XFree 3.x could be done by looking at the X
symbolic link to see which driver it points at. I assume that under 4.x
it's in the configuration somewhere. But this doesn't do anything for
you if the machine is running MetroLink or XiG.
