    Some cards require that the plug and play option be disabled in order to
    work under linux. I know this from experience with some of the 3COM cards.
     In that case, I downloaded the DOS (yes, DOS!) software to do so from the
    3COM web site. I think one can also disable it from inside Windows 98
    before switching to linux. I did that on another machine, but I haven't
    actually installed linux yet to test it.

    Maybe you brother is having a similar problem.
