Yes, and it's been cooking long enough that I would like to be running it
again. Maybe after the current hardware trickel-down finishes a suitable
"spare" machine will be available once again.

I'm really not sure. As I said, I long ago got into the habit of building
kernels from the standard sources, so I've never really had anything to do
with Debian's kernel packages. In that one respect I guess I haven't given
up my Slackware roots. :-)

I know it is easy to get the sources, and unpack them along with the Debian
patches (which are sometimes nothing but the overhead needed for building
deb packages from the source). I've never tried building with altered
compiler options, though. Hmmm. If you pursue this, I would be interested
in what you find.
