Oops, my bad. You don't need root access to see /var/log/dmesg.
If the NIC is being recognized by the OS during boot, then there will be an
entry in the file dmesg starting with "eth0:" that should give you some
useful information. On debian it is found in /var/log/. If you have
booted the system recently, you can just run the command "dmesg | less" and
you should see it towards the end. Of course, if the card is not being
recognized at boot time, then there won't be any entry at all for that
"eth" number.
