    If the NIC is being recognized by the OS during boot, then there will be an
    entry in the file dmesg starting with "eth0:" that should give you some
    useful information. On debian it is found in /var/log/, which can only be
    accessed as root. If you have booted the system recently and you don't
    have root access, you can just run the command "dmesg | less" and you
    should see it towards the end. Of course, if the card is not being
    recognized at boot time, then there won't be any entry at all for that
    "eth" number.
