Bottom line: no matter what you do there will be people who won't see it. I
know all about this from the number of times I get asked a question that's
answered by a brief, clear description ont he screen in front of their
faces. Nor is there any very stong correlation between "smarts" and the
frequency of such "stupid" questions, except that the students in the
advanced classes tend not to ask the same question the next time they're
in the lab... at least not as often.

In other words, "unsubscribe?" will be with us always. Trying to filter
them won't catch every one, and as we've seen can catch normal traffic from
time to time. (I wonder if Simon will have to rescue this missive from the
filter?) What we need is not to pile yet more marginally useful hacks up in
vain hope that they will perform a miracle; rather, we need a sensible plan
for dealing with the ones that will, inevitably, get past a reasonable
filter (which may be no filter). I think the plan might look something like
    this:

     1) DO NOT RESPOND TO THESE ON-LIST.

     2) An informative e-mail, probably a canned response, should be sent
privately. Ideally we could have a perfect filter that does this
and sends exactly one such response, but duplicates aren't a problem
as long as you SEE RULE #1.

     3) Please apply RULE #1 when replying to those who did not themselves
        follow RULE #1.

     4) Don't forget RULE #1, please!

Oh, and it would probably be a fine idea if new subscribers were sent a copy
of this information and/or if it were available on the web site, but that's
    just an optimization. :-)
